Clogged Arteries?
Share
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition where the arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle become narrowed or blocked. This happens because of a buildup of fatty deposits called plaques on the artery walls, a process known as atherosclerosis. Here’s what you need to understand about CAD:
### Causes and Risk Factors
- **Atherosclerosis**: The primary cause of CAD. It involves the buildup of cholesterol and other substances in the artery walls.
- **Risk Factors**: These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, lack of physical activity, and a family history of heart disease.
### Symptoms
- **Chest Pain (Angina)**: This is the most common symptom and can feel like pressure, squeezing, or fullness in your chest.
- **Shortness of Breath**: You may feel breathless, especially during physical activity.
- **Heart Attack**: If a plaque ruptures and a blood clot forms, it can completely block the artery, causing a heart attack. Symptoms include severe chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.
### Diagnosis
- **Physical Exam**: Your doctor will check your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other risk factors.
- **Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)**: Measures the electrical activity of your heart to find signs of heart disease.
- **Stress Test**: Shows how well your heart works under physical stress.
- **Angiography**: Uses X-ray imaging to see the blood flow through your coronary arteries.
### Treatment
- **Lifestyle Changes**: These include a healthy diet, regular exercise, quitting smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight.
- **Medications**: Drugs like statins to lower cholesterol, aspirin to reduce blood clots, and other medications to manage blood pressure and symptoms.
- **Procedures**: In some cases, procedures like angioplasty (to open blocked arteries) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) may be necessary.
### Prevention
- **Healthy Lifestyle**: Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, not smoking, and managing stress are crucial.
- **Regular Check-ups**: Monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other health markers helps in early detection and management.
Understanding these aspects of CAD can help you manage the condition effectively and improve your heart health. If you have any symptoms or risk factors, it's important to consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
